Being an avid dog lover/walker and with winter upon us, I have decided to have a look into the pet clothing that we as owners can use to protect our favorite pet from the ravages of winter weather. One such item is a Dog Fleece. This article is intended to provide a bit of background on this great piece of dog accessories and hopefully you will look at keeping your canine friend happy this winter.
If we look at the first instance, there are obvious health benefits for the dog, pretty much the same as it would be for you and I if we were exposed to bad weather without protection. Some breeds have better natural defenses against this type of weather, for example the winter coat of a New Foundland or a St. Bernard. However, other breeds do not have that luxury, for example my own two dogs are a Beagle and a Border terrier. Both are short haired breeds and would very much benefit from a dog fleece.
In my part of the world winter is usually wet, windy and cold. Sometimes we have some snow, but mainly it is cold. Being sensible we wrap ourselves up against the ravages of the winter weather, getting out our waterproof jackets, boots and woolly hats. Dogs don’t have that luxury, so it is down to us to provide what we can for them. These can either be practical and do the job intended, i.e. keep the dog warm and dry, or in some cases they can be merely fashion accessories.
A good ‘practical’ dog fleece will keep the dog both dry and warm. Most examples will have a waterproof outer material, lined with a fibrous material to trap air, warmed by the dogs own body heat. The dog fleece will generally cover the body from just in front of the tail all the way forward to the neck and down both flanks. There will be some form of fastening, usually straps that clip together. Some examples may also cover the top half of each leg, down to the knee joint.
Whilst buying a dog fleece hasn’t been an option considered before, it is certainly one worth thinking about now. As dogs get older and their joints start to stiffen up, severe weather conditions have more of an effect on them. The protection afforded by a good dog fleece can make the difference between a dog that retains a reasonable amount of mobility and one that slowly limps round whilst out walking.
