spring flowers- how do i choose?
i live in south-east florida, about ten minutes form the beach and am wondering what kind of flowers would be good for a small low-maintenance garden?
the small area that i would plant the flower ahs nice soil, and is right in front of the fence. i’d say it only gets a couple of hours of sun, and then
i was wondering about what kind of plants would work wlel for hanging plants?
thank you!
Impatiens are good for partial shade areas, and cover themselves with flowers for months on end. They’re not trailing, though can be pot grown, as well as in borders.
Consider a Thumbergia alata, which is a climbing or trailing plant, covered with orange or yellow flowers, with a dark centre. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_Q7T-ShVadVQ/SDJRwNi1DxI/AAAAAAAAB78/dvqijjOQT00/Ojo+de+poeta+(Thumbergia+alata).JPG http://vidanatural.fortunecity.com/thu5-1.jpg
Petunias are fairly strong plants, some of them trailing – http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/1546/11207597.JPG&imgrefurl=http://www.dkimages.com/discover/DKIMAGES/Discover/Home/Gardening/Container-Gardening/Displays/Mixed-Pots/Mixed-Pots-10.html&usg=__sI5k3Z5FswXB3jTkxJgfME2P-v4=&h=512&w=512&sz=56&hl=en&start=4&um=1&tbnid=8T3yFHwJE1ttaM:&tbnh=131&tbnw=131&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpetunia%2Btrailing%2Bphoto%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dopera%26rls%3Den%26sa%3DG%26um%3D1 various colours, and patterned flowers – http://www.jparkers.co.uk/images/new_products/BT0429.JPG http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.veseys.com/us/en/images/products/large/1879.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.veseys.com/us/en/store/annuals/petunia/doublecascade/image&usg=__PNcteuaxBrAkAHlZ05Q2r0UzFyM=&h=350&w=350&sz=45&hl=en&start=194&um=1&tbnid=h4pCNgRMrn5ujM:&tbnh=120&tbnw=120&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpetunia%2Btrailing%2Bphoto%26ndsp%3D20%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dopera%26rls%3Den%26sa%3DN%26start%3D180%26um%3D1
Nasturtiums grow anywhere, preferably poor soil, but will trail or climb, and come in a range of colours http://www.unwins.co.uk/images/products/product_1033_large.jpg
Whilst these can be planted late spring, they are summer performers.
Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
