Every day dogs from around the world are rushed to the emergency veterinarian hospitals due to foods fed to them by their owners. Halloween is one of those times each year when the number of dogs taken for emergency care increases. Please read this article carefully and take it seriously. Don’t put your dog in harms way when it is so easily avoided.
- The following 10 food items are known to cause problems in some dogs.
- Alcoholic beverages are known to cause intoxication, coma and death.
- Chocolate, coffee, tea and other foods containing caffeine can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous systems.
- Fruit pits can become lodged in the digestive system causing obstruction.
- Grapes and raisins contain an unknown toxin known to damage the kidneys.
- Hops can cause panting, increased heart rate, elevated temperature, seizures and death. Hops are used primarily as a flavoring and stability agent when brewing beer. However, they are also used in other beverages and herbal medicines.
- Macadamia nuts contain an unknown toxin that is known to affect the digestive and nervous systems and cause muscular problems such as weakness and tremors.
- Marijuana can depress the dog’s nervous system, causing vomiting and changes in their heart rate.
- Milk and other dairy products can sometimes cause diarrhea. This is especially true if the dog has an insufficient amount of lactase enzymes
- Persimmon seeds are known to have caused intestinal obstruction and enteritis in dogs.
- Any foods or candies sweetened with Xylitol (a substitute for sugar used in sugar-free candy, gums and baked goods) which can result in low blood sugar and liver damage in dogs.
There are many other food substances that can be harmful to dogs such as garlic, raw or cook onions and onion powder, potatoes, rhubarb and tomato leaves. Sugary foods not only lead to obesity but can also cause dental problems and possibly diabetes mellitus. Raw eggs, raw fish and too much salt can also lead to canine health problems.
Since they rely on us to take care of their health needs, it’s important we all know what may or may not harm our dogs. A little education can go a long way towards preserving their health and ours. So, just as we do with our children, we also need to understand our dog’s digestive needs and what Not to give them.
Pumpkin is actually good for your dog. Many veterinarians recommend putting small amounts in your dog’s food. However, moderation is always key to anything we feed ourselves or our pets.
For Halloween 2009 lets all take care to be sure our lovable pets stay healthy. Educate your children about the hazards of sharing their candy with the family dog. Don’t let a tragedy result when a small amount of awareness can prevent it from happening. We can all have a very scary but safe and fun time on Halloween.
